In Thakurgaon, the two-day storm of Kalbaishakhi has uprooted trees, destroyed houses and caused extensive damage to crops in various parts of the district. Some areas have been left without electricity due to the tearing of electricity wires. Meanwhile, a housewife named Labani Akhtar died in a lightning strike in Pirganj of the district.
The Kalbaishakhi storm hit suddenly on Sunday (April 26) night with gusty winds and lightning. The hour-long cyclone caused extensive damage. Although the intensity of the storm decreased somewhat later, intermittent rain with thunder continued. Baliadangi upazila of the district suffered the most damage in the storm. Several houses in that area were partially or completely destroyed. The religious educational institution Dabiria Darul Uloom Madrasa and Orphanage Complex established in the Ratnai School Hat area were swept away. The roofs of several houses in Pirganj Upazila, the roof of a mosque and the tin roof of a madrasa were blown away. The 33,000-volt main line wire was torn in the Paikpara area of ​​Rahimanpur Union in Sadar Upazila. This has left hundreds of people without electricity. A housewife named Laboni Akhter alias Selina (35) died tragically in a lightning strike in Niamatpur village of Saidpur Union in Pirganj Upazila. Selina Akhter was staying near her house when a sudden thunderstorm started on Sunday. She died on the spot after being struck by lightning.
The deceased Laboni Selina Akhter is the wife of Rashidul Islam of that village.
Alamgir Kabir, Additional Deputy Director of the District Agricultural Extension Department, said that due to the storm, crops of maize on 358 hectares, chillies on 94 hectares, vegetables on 21 hectares, summer onions on 1, mangoes, litchis and papaya on 382 hectares and bananas on 7 hectares were damaged.
Earlier, the Kalbaishakhi storm caused extensive damage in one phase on Saturday around 7 am.
Quoting Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rafiqul Haque, he said that reports of damage have been received in various upazilas of the district due to the Kalbaishakhi storm. Work is underway to assess the actual picture of the damage. Upazila Executive Officers have been instructed to provide assistance to the affected people.
