Mohammad Idris, Brahmanbaria: The Brahmanbaria district branch of the Bangladesh Nurses Association (BNA) has observed a symbolic shutdown program in support of eight demands. Nurses and midwives gathered near the administrative office of the 250-bed Brahmanbaria General Hospital on Sunday to observe the program.

Their demands include stopping attempts to merge the separate nursing and midwifery departments into separate departments and forming a National Nursing Commission.

Patients suffered greatly due to this program from 10 am. However, the gynecology and obstetrics ward, emergency department, operating room, S.C.A.N.U. department, and cardiology department were not covered by this program. On the other hand, a 17-member emergency squad was formed to serve patients in the wards participating in the shutdown program.

The hospital’s senior pediatrician Dr. Akhter Hossain said that the shutdown of nurses is severely disrupting indoor services. The nurses were not available when they made rounds in the ward at 10 am.

BNA Brahmanbaria district branch president Mosammat Kohinur Begum said that if the demands are not met, a complete shutdown will be observed on December 2.

The hospital receives an average of 2,500 to 3,000 patients daily. There are about 500 patients admitted in various wards.

Meanwhile, the protesters have postponed tomorrow’s (December 1) program due to the illness of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
