Advocate Atiqur Rahman, central president of Bangladesh Workers’ Welfare Federation, said, “Media cooperation is needed to shape public opinion on workers’ rights.” He said this at a view-exchange meeting with journalists from electronic and print media on the occasion of International Workers’ Day on Wednesday, April 29 at 8:30 pm.
The meeting was held at Bagicha Thai and Chinese Restaurant in Segunbagicha, Segunbagicha, Bangladesh Workers’ Welfare Federation.
He further said that since its inception, the organization has been working tirelessly to realize workers’ rights and improve the living standards of workers. However, many important demands are not implemented due to lack of public opinion, which is regrettable.
He said that a large workers’ rally will be held at the southern gate of the National Mosque Baitul Mukarram on May 1 at 3 pm under the initiative of the organization. The leader of the opposition party in the Bangladesh National Parliament and Ameer-e-Jamaat Dr. Shafiqur Rahman.
Also present at the exchange of views were Vice President Kabir Ahmed, Vice President Mujibur Rahman Bhuiyan, General Secretary Laskar Mohammad Tasnim, Deputy General Secretary Advocate Alamgir Hossain, Deputy General Secretary Md. Akhtaruzzaman, Office Secretary Nurul Amin and other central leaders.
Central President Advocate Atiqur Rahman listened attentively to the opinions of the journalists and mentioned the day’s programs and demands and said that processions, rallies, blood donation programs, financial assistance, distribution of educational materials, health and nutrition campaigns and tree plantation programs have been taken across the country on the occasion of May Day. In addition, initiatives have been taken to create awareness about the rights of workers through the imams of the country’s mosques.
In addition, the demands included declaring a minimum wage, reducing the price of daily necessities, ensuring fair prices for farmers, reducing the price of fertilizers and pesticides, stopping extortion in the transport sector, providing employment letters to workers, ensuring the right to form trade unions, and stopping unreasonable layoffs. They also called for compensation for expatriate workers and the implementation of the July National Charter.
