A massive fire broke out at an oil refinery and petrochemical complex in Rajasthan, just a day before the inauguration by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The incident took place at the refinery in Rajasthan’s Baltora district on Monday (April 20).
Although there was no official confirmation yet, a video circulating on social media showed the fire breaking out inside the refinery complex. The refinery is operated by state-owned oil marketing company Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL).
The Hindu has contacted HPCL representatives for comment on the incident. It has been informed that it will update the report once more information is available.
Meanwhile, a press briefing of refinery and government officials scheduled for Monday (April 20) has been postponed indefinitely.
HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Limited (HRRL) is a greenfield refinery-cum-petrochemical complex located in Baltora. It has a total production capacity of 9 million or 9 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA), of which 2.4 MMTPA is earmarked for petrochemical production.
