Md. Nur Islam Nayan, Dinajpur Correspondent: Magh is still strong in nature. When public life is disrupted by the cold wind from the north, golden buds have started peeking out from the mango trees of Dinajpur with the message of the arrival of the king of the season, spring. The fragrant smell of these buds that have arrived early in different parts of the district is being enjoyed by everyone around. However, just as garden owners see a ray of hope in the early buds, their worries about dense fog and rotting diseases are not going away.
On the ground, it was seen that early buds are blooming in various villages and gardens of 10 unions of the district, along the Dinajpur-Dhaka highway, the city’s modern intersection, the toll plaza area adjacent to Mohanpur Bridge, the Fazilpur Union Parishad premises and various gardens of Parbatipur Upazila. The yellow buds on the trees indicate that the mango season is here.
Al Amin, a mango tree owner in Mohanpur More area, said that his 20-year-old Goti variety tree has been producing early buds for the past few years. He said that although it is good to see early buds, the only fear is the dense fog. If there is a lot of fog, there is a risk of buds being destroyed by powdery mildew or rot disease. Ismail and Abdul Aziz of Sarkarpara village in Rampur union expressed the same fear. According to them, many trees have started producing buds about a month ago.
Azim Uddin, the owner of Dinajpur Mango Garden in Boro Mereyapara village of Basirbania, said that there are about 3,000 mango trees in his garden. Since the early buds appeared, he has started primary care and supervision of the trees so that no diseases can attack them.
Experts say that due to weather changes and certain varieties, buds have started to appear before the scheduled time. In this regard, Dinajpur Agricultural Extension Department Additional Deputy Director (Crops) Md. Anisuzzaman said, every year some trees bud early. If they are not affected by dense fog, it is possible to get early harvest from these trees. However, the buds that appear at the end of Magh according to the rules are usually more permanent. According to agricultural officials, if the weather is favorable and the incidence of fog decreases, then this time there will be a bumper mango harvest in the district. Now it is only a matter of waiting for time, whether the buds turn into pods after the winter of Magh or not.
