An elderly woman named Acia Begum (82) was killed in an attack by opponents over a land dispute in Aditmari Upazila of Lalmonirhat. The incident took place on Saturday (July 26) morning in the Khalkata area of Uttar Gobadha village in Durgapur union of the upazila.
According to eyewitnesses and the family of the deceased, Dalil Islam of Uttar Gobadha village had been in a dispute with his cousins over 74 percent of the land for a long time. When a case was filed in court regarding the ownership of the land, the verdict came in favor of Dalil Islam.
On Saturday morning, when the opponents Atiyar, Matiya, Rezaul, Fazaler Haque and Fazlu along with a group of people went to occupy the land, Dalil Islam’s mother Acia Begum stopped her. At that time, one of the opponents hit her with a stick and she died on the spot.
The deceased’s grandson Shariful Islam said, “Despite the court’s verdict, the opponents came to seize the land by force. When my grandmother resisted, they hit her with sticks, killing her on the spot.” Confirming the incident, Aditmari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Akbar Ali said, “An old woman died due to a land dispute. The body has been recovered and sent to the Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.” A woman has been arrested in the incident and a police operation is underway to arrest the remaining accused.
There is extreme tension in the area over the incident.
