SB-Sujon, Lalmonirhat : Police have recovered the body of a first-grade student named Nandini Rani (7) buried in a cornfield in Aditmari Upazila of Lalmonirhat. After the main accused was arrested in this incident, a massive clash took place between the police and the local crowd to snatch her away.
The child’s body was recovered from a cornfield in Folimari village of Bhelabari Union of the upazila on Tuesday (June 16) morning. The deceased Nandini Rani was the daughter of farmer Nalani Barman of the village and a first-grade student of the local BRAC Pre-Primary School.
Family members said that she had been missing since last Monday (June 15) afternoon.  After much searching, his body was found buried in a cornfield and wrapped in sacks on Tuesday morning.
The angry mob set fire to the house of the accused and vandalized the cars of the Deputy Commissioner (DC), Superintendent of Police (SP) and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO). At that time, the police lobbed sound grenades to bring the situation under control, and at least 30 people, including several policemen and locals, were injured.
After the murder, the Aditmari police station, investigating the case, identified the child’s uncle (family relations) Bidhan (19) as the main accused. The police immediately arrested him from the spot. However, when the accused was taken to the police station after his arrest, the local angry mob blocked the police’s path and tried to snatch the accused. At one stage, the angry mob set fire to the house of the murderer Bidhan.
When the situation became heated, senior administration officials including the Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and UNO reached the spot with additional police and BGB members. The administration tried to calm the locals by convincing them. But when they returned with the accused, the angry crowd got agitated again and started pelting bricks at the administration vehicle indiscriminately. This caused extensive damage to the government vehicles used by the DC, SP and UNO and at least 30 locals including several policemen were injured.
In this regard, Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Muh. Rashedul Haque Pradhan said, after finding the child’s body in the cornfield, the police went there to take legal action. But the people obstructed the accused while bringing him. Later, we went there with the BGB and a large number of policemen. When we tried to convince everyone and bring him back, brickbats suddenly started being thrown. Several of our vehicles were vandalized and several policemen were injured.
Lalmonirhat Superintendent of Police Asaduzzaman Asad said, “The police convoy was attacked while bringing the accused. Several vehicles were vandalized and some of our members were injured. A case will be filed in this incident for obstructing state work.” He added that due to the situation that arose, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Aditmari Police Station, Nazmul Islam, has been immediately withdrawn. Currently, the environment in the area is normal and the entire matter is being closely monitored and investigated.
