Fayzul Islam:
A discussion meeting marking July Martyrs’ Day 2026 was held in Savar, organized by the Savar Upazila Administration.
The event was chaired by Savar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Saiful Islam and attended by July Movement veterans, family members of the July martyrs, local professionals, and leaders of various political parties.
Speakers at the discussion emphasized that the aspirations of the July martyrs must be realized through the united efforts of all citizens. They noted that today’s new Bangladesh emerged through the sacrifices of nearly 1,400 martyrs and around 30,000 injured protesters, making it a collective responsibility to protect and uphold the values for which they fought.
The chief guest, Member of Parliament for Dhaka-19, Dr. Dewan Mohammad Salauddin Babu, said the political changes that have taken place in the country—including the parliamentary election, the formation of a new government, and the restoration of democratic space—were the direct outcome of the July 2024 movement.
“I was elected by the people, and today I am able to represent them, speak freely, hold public meetings, and stand beside my constituents because of the sacrifices made during the July movement,” he said.
The MP also pledged continued support for those injured during the movement in Savar, noting that many are still undergoing treatment while others continue to live with permanent disabilities.
“I have stood beside the July fighters from the very beginning and will continue to do so,” he added.
Dr. Babu further remarked that he was grateful to Almighty Allah, saying that without such a mass movement it would not have been possible to remove the authoritarian government through a democratic electoral process.
Drawing a comparison with Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971, he said people from all walks of life united irrespective of political affiliation or place of residence to achieve independence. However, he alleged that in later years some individuals who had not participated in the Liberation War claimed its spirit to create divisions, while many genuine freedom fighters did not receive the recognition and respect they deserved.
He urged society to ensure that the same injustice is not repeated for the July Movement veterans and the families of those who lost their lives.
“No July fighter or martyr’s family should ever face neglect or disrespect. It is our collective responsibility to safeguard their dignity and honour,” he said.
