Staff Reporter : A court in Sherpur sent three people, including journalist Marufur Rahman Fakir (47), to jail on Thursday on charges of extortion. After being produced before the court on Thursday afternoon, March 12, Chief Judicial Magistrate Bulbul Ahmed, judge of the Amli Court, ordered them to be sent to the district jail.
Maruf is a resident of Narayanpur Mohalla in the city and the son of the deceased Matiur Rahman of Pakuria village in Sadar upazila. Along with him, Sajeeb Kumar Dey, son of Narayanpur in the city, and Md. Jahidul (25), son of Khorshed Alam of Bamanerchar area of the upazila, were sent to jail on the same charges. Maruf is working as the Sherpur district correspondent of Ananda TV and a correspondent for the online version of Dainik Janakantha. He is accused of being involved in various crimes by using his journalistic influence. There are cases of extortion, attempted rape and murder in the court.
He has also served time in these cases. According to the complaint, on Wednesday afternoon, Anand TV district correspondents Marufur Rahman, Sajeeb Kumar Dey and Zahidul entered the inner room of the house of Syed Abdullahel Hadi and Syeda Helena Hadi in the city’s Madhyasheri area. At that time, they threatened the house with illegal goods, recorded a video, and demanded a ransom of 5 lakh taka from Syeda Helena Hadi.
They also threatened to hand over their son to the police if he did not pay. Later, when Helena Hadi started screaming, the people around rushed to arrest Maruf and the three others and beat them up on charges of extortion. Later, after receiving the information, the police went to the spot, arrested them and took them to the police station. A video of the beating of journalist Maruf in that incident went viral on social media. Meanwhile, Helena Hadi filed a case with Sadar Police Station accusing the three people arrested in the incident and Md. Tamal (38), son of the deceased Lotan Mia of Narayanpur area, of four others. The case also alleges that they were extorted by threatening him and demanding Tk 3 lakh. However, Tamal is absconding. Meanwhile, journalist Maruf has also been accused of extortion before.
He was earlier arrested while trying to extort money from an under-construction house in Jhenaigati. The police have already filed a chargesheet in the court in the extortion case filed against him in that incident. He is also the accused in the sensational case of kidnapping a businessman named Rezaul Karim and killing him on the Durgapur border in Netrokona.
Earlier, he was arrested by RAB in a case of attempted rape of a teenage girl from his area and was in custody. In this regard, Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Sohel Rana said, 3 people were arrested on Wednesday afternoon after receiving a written complaint of extortion.
