ISDE Bangladesh is distributing food assistance in phases to 5,000 families in Chakaria, Pekua and Matamuhuri upazilas affected by the recent floods in Cox’s Bazar. In the second phase of the program, food items were handed over to 1,000 flood-affected families in Phansiakhali Union No. 8 and Kaiarbil Union No. 3 of Chakaria Upazila on Sunday (July 19).
ISDE Bangladesh is implementing this humanitarian assistance program funded by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) of Saudi Arabia. In this phase, food items were distributed to 500 families in Phansiakhali Union Parishad and another 500 families in Kaiarbil Union Parishad.
Earlier, in the first phase of the same program, food assistance was distributed to 1,000 flood-affected families in Chakaria Municipality. The organization said that food aid will be delivered to the remaining affected families in phases.
Each family was given a complete food package consisting of 10 kg of rice, 7 kg of pulses, 3 liters of soybean oil, 1 kg of sugar and 1 kg of salt. According to the organizers, this aid will play an important role in addressing the immediate food crisis of the flood-affected families.
Administrative officer Md. Ataul Gani Parvez, prominent politician and social worker Qutub Uddin and Engineer Shahedul Mostafa were present at the distribution ceremony organized at the Phansiakhali Union Parishad.
Present at the program held at Koyarbil Union Parishad were Union Parishad Secretary Nurul Alam, prominent politician and social worker Shekafuddin Uddin, UP members Mozammel Haque (Ward No. 4), Nurul Islam (Ward No. 9), Akhter Ahmed (Ward No. 5), Abul Kalam (Ward No. 8), former UP member Abu Yusuf Mohammad Yahya (Ward No. 7) and social worker Ariful Islam.
Project Coordinator Md. Jahangir Alam, Upazila Manager Jalal Uddin, Project Officer (Mill) Mostaq Ahmed and Project Officer (Logistics) Taj Uddin were present on behalf of ISDE Bangladesh.
Local public representatives said that many families have lost their homes, food items and sources of livelihood in the recent floods and are facing a humanitarian crisis. Such food assistance is playing an effective role in alleviating the suffering of the affected people and instilling new hope among them.
Md. Jahangir Alam, Project Coordinator of ISDE Bangladesh, said, “It is our humanitarian responsibility to stand by the flood-affected people. In the first phase, 1,000 families of Chakaria Municipality have been provided with food assistance. Today, in the second phase, 1,000 more families of Phansiakhali and Kaiarbil Unions have received this assistance. Food assistance will be delivered to all 5,000 affected families in phases.”
The beneficiaries expressed relief after receiving the food assistance. They said that due to the flood, many families have lost their homes, livelihoods, and income. At such a time, this food assistance has been a great help for their families and has reduced the food worries of the families, at least for a few days.
Earlier, food assistance has been distributed to about 56,000 beneficiaries, including various remote areas of the host community and Rohingya refugee camps. The organization further stated that ISDE Bangladesh will continue its such humanitarian assistance activities in the future to ensure food security of people living in disasters and humanitarian crises.
