Md. Fayjul Islam, Savar: After a long wait, the final results of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JACSU) elections have been announced. Abdur Rashid Jitu of the Independent Students’ Union Panel has been elected as the Vice President (VP). Mazharul Islam of the Shibir-backed Integrated Students’ Union has been elected as the General Secretary (GS).
The results were announced by Chief Election Commissioner Professor Md. Moniruzzaman at the university’s Senate Building on Saturday (September 13) at 7:15 pm.
The Shibir-backed Integrated Students’ Union won 20 of the 25 posts in JACSU in the elections. Of the remaining four, two were elected by the Bangladesh Democratic Students’ Union (BAGCHAS) and two by independents.
Earlier, voting in the JACSU elections began on Thursday (September 11) from 9 am. It continued until 5 pm. The counting of votes began on that day at 10:15 pm. However, the Election Commission took so long to announce the results because the votes were counted manually.
However, the much-awaited election was boycotted by four panels including Chhatra Dal and five independent candidates. Four pro-BNP teachers, including an election commissioner, resigned, alleging that there was no level playing field in the election and various irregularities.
There were 177 candidates for 25 central posts in the election. The total number of voters was 11,897. Of these, 6,115 were male and 5,728 were female. About 68 percent of the votes were cast.
