Galachipa (Patuakhali) Correspondent :

Hundreds of families are living in extreme poverty due to waterlogging in ward number 9 of the municipality of Galachipa upazila of Patuakhali district. It can be seen on the ground that despite being a first-class municipality, due to the ongoing hostile weather and rain, the local residents are living a life of humanity due to the lack of roads and drainage system for civic amenities.

Locals complain that they are living a miserable life due to waterlogging for 9 months of the year, despite extensive monitoring, the minds of the concerned have not changed at all. Although the public representatives made colorful promises during the elections, the quality of life of the local people has not improved even after a long year, and no one even inquires about it.

School and college students constantly have to cross the muddy water to continue their studies. Besides, we have to run to the hospital all year round due to water-borne diseases. Despite being a modern municipality, we are living an inhuman life due to neglect, deprived of all civic facilities. Our students’ appeal to the Honorable Prime Minister Mr. Tarique Rahman is that we are like the children of his daughter Jayma Rahman, if he considers our suffering and relieves us from this extreme suffering, we will be forever indebted to him.

A local businessman Md. Mahabub Hossain said, we are the most neglected in Galachipa Municipality. Despite all the government revenue, we are deprived of civic facilities, roads and drainage system.

Senior school teacher Md. Mohsin (Master) said, “I have been burning since birth” Despite being a first-class citizen of Galachipa Municipality, we are trapped in water like the people of the coastal region, who calls this survival? We have been drowning in dirty water all year round, despite handling a lot of papers, no benefit has been obtained, despite the promises made during the election, it has not seen the light of day. I don’t know whether I will get any civic benefits in my lifetime? Even today, it is not certain whether the suffering of these neglected people will be reduced.

Information says that on March 17, 1997, Galachipa Municipality was formed with 9 wards, with a total area of 3.39 square kilometers and a population of more than 25 thousand.

In this regard, Galachipa Upazila Municipal Administrator and Executive Officer Abuzar Md. Ijazul Haque said, the government is working to implement 100% services for citizens’ rights such as safe housing, good medical care, education, roads, well-planned drainage system, necessary measures have already been taken to reduce the suffering of the people trapped in water in Ward No. 9 of Galachipa. I hope that the suffering of the people will reduce soon according to government norms.
