Jhalkathi Nalchiti in a human chain and road blockade has been set up to demand the stop of sand extraction by dredgers in Sugandha river. An hour-long human chain was held in front of Magar Union Parishad in Ujela around 11 am on Wednesday. Later, the families of the victims of river erosion blocked the road by protesting on the Jhalakathi Barisal highway. The victims said that due to the extraction of sand by illegal dredger machines during the night for a long time, erosion has occurred in the area next to Sugandha river. Due to continuous river erosion, agricultural lands along with houses have been lost under the river bed. Various structures including numerous houses in the area are under the threat of river erosion. In this situation, if the sand extraction with dredgers is not stopped, the local residents fear massive damage. Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Basad) Barisal district branch member secretary said during the human chain. Manisha Chakraborty, member Shantu Mitra, local ex-UP member Jamal Khan, Principal of Magar Government Primary School Shahnaz Akhtar, Superintendent of Chalehia Dakhil Madrasa Magar Noor Alam Siddiqui, Principal of Amirabad Government Primary School Jahangir Hossain. Victims of river erosion and local residents organized this human chain.
