Rajib Dey: The health sector has been given second highest priority in the budget to ensure healthcare for the people of this country, said Social Welfare Minister Professor Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain. He said, “After independence, martyred President Ziaur Rahman believed that all types of medical systems should be given importance to provide healthcare to the vast population of Bangladesh. Therefore, martyred President Ziaur Rahman decided to introduce a system to scientificize and modernize the Unani, Ayurvedic and homeopathic medical education systems to ensure healthcare for a large number of people of this country.”
The minister said this while speaking as the chief guest at a workshop and doctors’ gathering titled ‘Role of Unani, Ayurvedic and Homeopathic Medicine in Building a Healthy Bangladesh’ organized by the Unani Ayurvedic Graduate Doctors Association of Bangladesh (AgDAB) at the Quality Inn in Farmgate, Dhaka on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
The Social Welfare Minister said that most of the population of this country is dependent on these medical systems in one way or another, which are being used as an integral part of our tradition and culture. He stressed the importance of establishing a place of reliability in the minds of the people by providing these three types of medical services out of the four types of medical systems prevalent in Bangladesh, along with allopathy.
The minister, urging to open primary medical services to everyone, said that more research should be done to achieve excellence in this medical science and postgraduate education should be expanded. If the acceptability of this medical system can be further increased through research, then people’s confidence will increase further.
He further said that in addition to allopathy prevalent in the country, all four systems—Unani, Ayurvedic and Homeopathic—have the opportunity to contribute from their own fields. However, homeopathy is currently more prevalent in the country compared to Unani and Ayurvedic. People are now also getting excited about herbal medicine and Hamdard is still working with a good reputation.
Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan, Director of Homeopathy and Indigenous Medicine of the Directorate General of Health Services Dr. Farida Yasmin, Secretary General of Bangladesh Nationalist Cultural Alliance Rafiqul Islam, and renowned Unani, Ayurvedic and Homeopathic physicians, educationists and policymakers of the country were present as special guests at the workshop and doctors’ gathering. The program was presided over by UAGUDAB President Dr. Mirza Lutfar Rahman Liton.
