Md Nur Islam Noyon :
Two policemen from Birampur and Hakimpur police stations have been closed on charges of snatching 7 gold bars from a smuggler in Birampur upazila of Dinajpur, which is close to the Indian border. The main planners here, Birampur police station OC Saiful Islam and constable Abdul Awal, have remained unaccounted for. There is a lot of discussion and criticism in Hakimpur and Birampur upazilas surrounding this incident.
The two accused policemen are Birampur police station radio operator Constable Rasheduzzaman and Hakimpur (Hili) police station Constable Saiful Islam. Based on the initial investigation, they have been withdrawn from the police lines as a measure against them.
According to local sources, on Wednesday morning, May 6, 2026, a man named Md. Jamil Hossain was heading towards the Indian border from Katla Bazar area of Birampur upazila on a bicycle. At that time, two policemen searched his body in front of Ramchandrapur tribal village. At one stage, a scuffle with the police started with Jamil.
A source said that the main planner of this gold robbery is Constable Abdul Awal, who has been on duty at Birampur police station for a long time, and Officer-in-Charge Md. Saiful Islam Sarkar. Constable Abdul Awal has built a strong network in this border area due to his long tenure at the same workplace. It has been alleged that he was involved in 8 gold bar scams earlier as well.
It is alleged that during the scuffle, Jamil cleverly threw five gold bars in his trouser pocket into a nearby pond. Later, the police handcuffed him and snatched two more gold bars, released Jamil and left the scene. It is said that after the police left the scene, Jamil went to a nearby house, changed clothes, and again retrieved the five gold bars that he had thrown into the pond and fled from there.
When the incident came to light, Assistant Superintendent of Police of Birampur Circle Harez Uddin and Inspector (Investigation) of Birampur Police Station Ataur Rahman visited the scene on Thursday afternoon, May 7. They spoke to witnesses at the scene.
A police member of Birampur Police Station, on condition of anonymity, said that after learning about the investigation, two constables submitted the two gold bars to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Islam Sarkar. However, the OC went on a three-day leave without taking any legal action in the incident.
Although attempts were made to contact Birampur Police Station OC Saiful Islam Sarkar on his mobile phone several times to get his statement on the matter, he did not answer the call.
Hakimpur (Hili) Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zakir Hossain said, “No complaint has been made to our police station regarding the incident involving gold in Birampur. However, a complaint has been filed against a constable of our police station. He was previously working at Birampur Police Station. The matter is under investigation and he has been closed.”
Assistant Superintendent of Police of Hili Circle ANM Niamat Ullah said, “Based on initial information, two policemen have been taken to the police lines. A committee has been formed to investigate the incident. Necessary action will be taken against those found involved in the investigation.”
