Touhid Hossain Sarkar,Comilla : The election rally of Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, a candidate for the 11-party alliance in Chauddagram, Comilla, wearing the symbol of the scales, has become a gathering of people from all walks of life, regardless of party affiliation. The rally, held at 9 am on Saturday (January 31), is believed by locals to have added a new dimension to Dr. Taher’s popularity.
Participating in the public meeting, Sanatani community president and teacher Anil Chandra Debnath said,
“We have never been harmed by any Jamaat leader or worker. Rather, whenever there has been any problem in this area, Jamaat people have provided us with security.”
He added, “There was political oppression at one time, but because of Taher Bhai’s role, we were able to live in peace. We, the followers of traditional religions, will work unitedly for justice and fairness.”
Teachers, former and current public representatives, social workers, and people from different walks of life attended the rally, making it an exceptional event. According to locals, such a scene is not often seen—only in the case of very popular personalities, such spontaneous presence is observed.
Several former union chairmen, members and freedom fighters addressed the public meeting before the arrival of Ameer-e-Jamaat Dr. Shafiqur Rahman. Their speeches praised Dr. Taher’s honesty, humanity and development-oriented leadership.
Former Chairman of Kalikapur Union No. 3 Md. Ruhul Amin, former Chairman of Sadar Union Md. Abul Kashem, former Chairman of Kankapait Union No. 9 Iqbal Hossain Majumder and freedom fighter Aktaruzzaman spoke.
Former chairman of Jagannathpur Union and brave freedom fighter Engineer Mojibur Rahman said,
“I am not from Jamaat-e-Islami. But all of us freedom fighters have united to vote for Taher Bhai. Almost sixty percent of the people of the upazila will vote in a landslide.”
Former chairman of Sreepur Union No. 4 and valiant freedom fighter Mostafa Nuruzzaman Khokon said,
“All past and present chairmen, members, and public representatives have unanimously decided to vote for Taher Bhai.”
The speeches of the speakers and the spontaneous participation of the crowd turned the public meeting into a symbol of the trust of the common people in Dr. Taher. Conscious circles believe that this unity of freedom fighters, public representatives and minority communities, rising above political ideology, is indicative of a new reality in the electoral politics of Chouddagram.
