There have been allegations of assault, beating and looting on forest department officials over the cutting of trees from the government Keora garden in the Mohipur area adjacent to Kuakata in the district. According to the complaint source, Rubel Mia, the officer-in-charge of the Kuakata Forest Camp, said that on April 23, around 11 am, he came to know based on secret information that some people were cutting trees from the Keora garden in the Tetrishkani area of Mohipur police station. Later, when he went to the spot with his forest workers, the accused found evidence of cutting 10-12 Keora trees of 3-4 feet in length, whose estimated value is about 12 thousand taka. While he was taking pictures and videos of cutting trees at the spot, the accused got angry and snatched his mobile phone and deleted the information on it. When the forest workers stopped him at that time, the accused attacked him with bricks, sticks, axes and saws. He and another forest worker who was with him were injured. Eyewitness Soleman Biswas said, if we had not been there, they would have killed the forest officials. 5-7 people attacked them.

Local resident Alamgir Hossain said, some locals including Alamin, Soleman cut down trees in the forest. Later, when the BIT officials got the information, they attacked them and beat them, injuring some forest officials. Meanwhile, it has also been alleged that 3,000 taka was taken from the wallet of forest worker Rubel during the attack.

Injured forest worker Rubel Hossain said, we were attacked when we went to protect government property. We were beaten and the money was snatched. Although attempts were made to contact accused Abu Saleh Fakir on his mobile phone several times, his statement could not be received. When another accused Al-Amin Fakir’s number was contacted, a person named Nesar, who identified himself as his son, said, “My father has gone to Kalapara. I do not know anything about the beating with the forest department people, I was in school at the time.” However, I heard that there was a dispute between them over money. Mahipur Range Officer Moniruzzaman said, “The issue of cutting trees from government gardens is a serious crime. The attack on our officers is also worrying. We are taking legal action.” Shamim Howlader, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mahipur Police Station, said, “We have received the complaint. Legal action will be taken after investigating the matter.”
