Shahin Fakir:
In Nesarabad, Pirojpur, the father of a newborn with a congenital disability has refused to accept him. However, ignoring her husband’s cruel orders, mother Liza Akhter has decided to return home with her child. On April 22, at around 8 pm, she gave birth to a son through a cesarean section at New Satta Private Hospital in the upazila’s Miarhat Port. The baby was born without two legs and one arm.
After receiving the news of the birth, the newborn’s father, a day laborer Al-Amin, refused to accept the child and asked his wife to give the child elsewhere or drop it off. But mother Liza Akhter has firmly rejected that decision out of compassion and love for her child.
Liza Akhter’s home is in the village of Kalardowania in the neighboring Nazirpur upazila. Setting a humanitarian example against the father’s cruel behavior, the hospital authorities have waived all medical expenses, including the cesarean section. The hospital’s managing director, Md. Golam Mostafa, took this initiative. In addition, the doctor who performed the operation, Dr. Pritish Biswas, has also waived his surgeon’s fee. While the father’s cruelty has come to the fore in this incident, the mother’s steadfast love and humanity have been praised by everyone.
The newborn’s mother, Liza Akhter, sat on the hospital bed and said in a tearful voice that she had a son and a daughter before her. This is her third child. She works as a daily wage laborer in Dhaka to earn a living. She came home a few days ago while the child was still in the womb and gave birth to this child through a cesarean section on April 22.
She said, “My child was not born with normal limbs like other children. He has two legs and one arm. That’s why my husband asked me to leave him. But I can never leave my child. Even if my husband does not keep me, I will not leave my child.” I will make him a human being.
She added in a tearful voice, “As long as I am alive, I will be able to work and feed my child. But the thought of who will look after my child if I die is what is troubling me. If any kind-hearted person extends a helping hand, I can at least ensure my child’s future.”
New Satta Private Hospital Managing Director Golam Mostafa said, “Considering the condition of this daily wage worker and the newborn, we have waived all hospital expenses. The doctor who performed the operation did not charge any fee either.”
Dr. Pritish Biswas, the doctor who conducted the operation, said, “Sometimes such children can be born due to genetic reasons or lack of proper treatment during pregnancy.” The operation was risky, but it was successfully completed. We are shocked because of the child’s physical defects. Considering the humanitarian aspect, I have also waived my surgeon’s fee.”
