Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called on police members to perform their duties with utmost sincerity and ability to ensure the peace and security of the people of the country.

He said, “Ensuring the peace and security of the people of the country depends most on the role of the police. You will work with all your might and ability to ensure the safety of people’s lives and property; this is the government’s expectation from you.”

The Prime Minister said these things at the inauguration ceremony of ‘Police Week-2026’ at Rajarbagh Police Lines ground this Sunday morning.

Urging police members to take a new oath, the Prime Minister said, “Your and our responsibilities do not end with remembrance alone. It is our sacred duty to protect the freedom of the martyred police brothers who sacrificed their lives for the independence of Bangladesh at any cost. No more fascism-dictatorship in this Bangladesh can use police members against the independence of the country and the people. Let us stand on this ground stained with the blood of the police in the first hour of independence, today we pledge ourselves to a new oath again.’

The Prime Minister said, ‘After the bloody mass uprising of the students and the public in 2024, in the continuation of the anti-fascist movement and struggle for more than a decade and a half, the current government formed by the verdict of the people is a reflection of the aspirations of the freedom-loving and democracy-loving people of the country. The victims of numerous assault cases for years, the oppressed, oppressed and disenfranchised people want peace and security in the current democratic government.’

Remembering all the policemen martyred in the liberation war with respect, he said, ‘This is the historic Rajarbagh Police Line, where the invading forces killed hundreds of sleeping policemen on the night of March 25, 1971, in a barbaric attack in the name of ‘Operation Searchlight’. I would like to begin by respectfully remembering all the police members who died in the Liberation War of Bangladesh.

Praising the performance of police members in the 13th National Assembly elections, the Prime Minister said, “This election has proven that Bangladesh Police is capable of performing its duties with efficiency and professionalism. Not only in the country, but also in UN peacekeeping operations, Bangladesh Police is working with efficiency and reputation.”

She further said, “Our police members have set shining examples of professionalism, courage and humanity in establishing peace, maintaining law and order and protecting human rights in different countries of the world. The role of female police members in UN peacekeeping missions has also been internationally praised. Therefore, humane behavior of the police is expected not only abroad but also with the people of the country.”

The Prime Minister further said, “On the one hand, Major Zia’s ‘We Revolt’ in Chittagong for the independence of Bangladesh, and on the other hand, the Rajarbagh police’s resistance to the death penalty in Dhaka; After that, there was no chance for the freedom-loving people to lag behind in the struggle for independence.

Noting that some questions still remain about the history of the Liberation War, she said, “From the generation during the Liberation War to today, that is, the post-Liberation War generation, those of us who have read history or learned about the Liberation War by listening to the direct experiences of the brave freedom fighters, still have some questions about the history of the Liberation War.”

Illustrating the context of 1971, the Prime Minister said, “When the Uttal March was a time of tension in the minds of the freedom-loving people and thousands of soldiers were being brought to Dhaka every day from the then West Pakistan, what strategy or logic the then political leadership had behind gathering all the police members together at the Rajarbagh Police Lines can still be a subject of research for researchers on the independence and liberation war of Bangladesh.”

At the end of her speech, the Prime Minister congratulated the police and RAB members who participated in the parade. At the same time, she wished the overall success of Police Week-2026.

Earlier in the morning, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the Police Week-2026 with the theme ‘My Police, My Country, Bangladesh First’.

The Prime Minister’s wife Zubaida Rahman was also present at the annual parade. Later, the Prime Minister and her wife visited the stall of Bangladesh Police Women Welfare Association (PUNAK).
