The National Parliament has unanimously passed the bill to form development authorities for five important cities of the country, including Cumilla.
On Friday (April 10), Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher Suman introduced the ‘Cumilla Development Authority Bill, 2026’ in the morning meeting of the 13th day of the 13th session of the National Parliament. Later, the bill was passed by voice vote.
At the same time, the Narayanganj, Barisal, Mymensingh and Rangpur Development Authority Bills, 2026 were also introduced in Parliament and they were also passed unanimously.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed presided over the session. Despite being a weekly government holiday, the proceedings of the Parliament continued.
While introducing the bill, Minister Zakaria Taher Suman said that through these bills, planned urban development, protection of the balance of the geo-natural environment and environment, and control of rapid urbanization will be possible. In addition, separate administrative structures will be established for development in the concerned cities, which will be helpful in increasing citizen services and ensuring better quality of life.
He further said that these new development authorities will play an important role in infrastructure development, urban planning and environmental conservation of the concerned areas.
