A couple tragically died in a fire in the Suihari Ashrampara area of Dinajpur city late at night. The incident took place around 12 am on Sunday (April 19). After the fire was brought under control, their charred bodies were recovered from inside the house around 1 am.
The deceased were Tapan Roy (50) and his wife Lata Rani (42). They had been living in the area for a long time. According to locals, they were known in the area as calm people.
According to local residents, flames were suddenly seen from Tapan Roy’s house around 12 am. Within moments, the fire spread throughout the house. The locals initially tried to extinguish the fire, but failed to control it. Later, on receiving information, the fire service quickly reached the spot and brought the fire under control after an hour of effort.
A fire service official said that the specific cause of the fire could not be determined immediately. However, it is initially believed that the fire may have started from an electrical short circuit or a flammable source. The matter is being investigated.
Most of the furniture and other belongings inside the house were burnt in the fire. The house is said to have been partially damaged. Work is underway to assess the extent of the damage.
A neighboring resident said, “We suddenly saw the fire and screamed and tried to extinguish it by pouring water. But the fire spread so quickly that nothing could be done.”
Dinajpur Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Noor Nabi said, “The body has been recovered from the scene and sent to the Dinajpur Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. An investigation has been launched to determine the actual cause of death. Legal action will be taken if necessary.”
Police said that they are investigating whether the incident was a mere accident or if there was another reason. Evidence has already been collected from the scene.
The incident has cast a shadow of mourning over the area. Neighbors expressed deep grief for the deceased couple and demanded a proper investigation into the incident.
