Laksam Correspondent:
Laksam Journalists Union President Zafar Ahmed has filed a written complaint with the Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives alleging that he was subjected to insulting behavior and threats while seeking information through the Right to Information Act in Laksam, Comilla.
According to the complaint source, the plaintiff Zafar Ahmed first sought some information from the Laksam Upazila Engineer under the Right to Information Act. But since the Upazila Engineer did not provide the information, he applied to the Upazila Executive Officer. Later, the UNO forwarded the application to the Upazila Engineering Branch and ordered to provide appropriate information.
As per the instructions, he was asked to collect information by submitting a 30 taka invoice from the Upazila Engineer’s office. The plaintiff submitted a 30 taka invoice and went to collect information on the afternoon of November 18. At that time, Community Organizer (CO) Md. Nizam Uddin, working in the Upazila Engineering Branch, provided only 9 pages of unverified copies instead of the information worth 30 taka, where the value should have been 18 taka according to the government’s calculations.
When questioned about this, CO Nizam Uddin became angry and behaved indecently with plaintiff Zafar Ahmed and tried to beat him, the complaint also states.
The complaint further states that the accused Nizam Uddin has been working in the same office for about 18-19 years and has been exerting influence and is involved in various irregularities and corruption. Although the service recipients are angry with his behavior, no one dares to complain publicly.
Plaintiff Zafar Ahmed wrote to the secretary of the ministry requesting an investigation into the incident and taking appropriate legal action against CO Nizam Uddin.
He expressed hope that the administration will investigate the matter seriously and take necessary action soon.
