Fayzul Islam:
At least four people were injured after a cocktail bomb exploded near a rally organized by the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Savar on Monday night.
The explosion occurred around 9:45 p.m. at the Eidgah Ground adjacent to Savar Bus Stand, shortly after a procession held as part of the party’s month-long “July Awakening to Build the Nation” campaign marking the anniversary of the July uprising.
The injured were identified as Md. Shahin Khondkar, 30, Md. Jasim, 26, Md. Shahadat Hossain, 40, and Imran, 29. They were rescued and taken to Enam Medical College Hospital for treatment.
According to eyewitnesses and party sources, Dhaka District NCP Convener Engineer Nabila Tasnid was delivering her speech when a cocktail bomb suddenly exploded a short distance from the stage, triggering panic among party leaders and supporters and causing temporary chaos.
Several senior NCP leaders, including Convener Nahid Islam, Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, MP, and Chief Organizer (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam, were present on the stage during the incident. None of the central leaders were injured.
NCP Central Committee member Yasir Arafat alleged that the attack was a premeditated attempt by unidentified miscreants to target the rally. He demanded the immediate identification and arrest of those responsible.
Following the blast, party leaders and activists, led by Nahid Islam, staged a protest march through different roads in the Savar police station area. Demonstrators condemned the attack and called for the swift arrest of the perpetrators and exemplary punishment.
Dr. Hasan, an emergency physician at Enam Medical College Hospital, said four injured individuals were brought to the hospital. One of them sustained serious injuries to a leg, while three received primary treatment before being referred for surgery. The fourth person was discharged after receiving first aid.
Additional police personnel were deployed to the scene immediately after the incident. Authorities said an investigation is underway to identify those involved in the attack.
The National Citizen Party is observing a month-long nationwide programme titled “July Awakening to Build the Nation” to commemorate the anniversary of the July uprising. Monday’s procession and rally in Savar were part of that campaign.
