On the occasion of July Martyrs’ Day, a discussion titled ‘July Uprising: State, Democracy and Citizen Rights’ was held at Maulana Bhashani University of Science and Technology.
On Sunday (July 26), the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the university, Professor Dr. ABM Shahidul Islam, was the chief guest at the discussion held at the seminar room on the 12th floor of the third academic building of the university.
At the program, convener of the July Uprising Celebration Committee, Professor Dr. Mostafa Kamal Nasir, presided over the keynote address, and Director of the Student Welfare and Counseling Center, Professor Dr. Md. Fazlul Karim. The main discussant was Professor Dr. Chowdhury Saima Ferdous, member of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission. The discussant was Professor Dr. AKM Mohiuddin, BGE Department, University. The welcome speech was delivered by the Member Secretary of the July Uprising Celebration Committee and Professor of the Department of Statistics, Dr. Md. Delwar Jahan Malay. Among others, the discussion was attended by Advocate Saida Akhter, elder sister of Shaheed Ahnaf Abir Ashraful, official representative Azad Khan Bhashani, Jamil Hossain, Imran Hossain Nadvi, Ashraful Alam Hridoy, Mehedi Hasan Rakib, Rahadul Islam, Zahidul Islam and Sampathi Khan on behalf of the students.
In his speech as the chief guest, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Shahidul Islam said, ‘The July Uprising is a significant chapter in our national life. The lessons of this movement on the issues of state, democracy and civil rights must be conveyed to the new generation. The youth must play an important role in building a humane, accountable and just state by learning from history.’
After the discussion, the guests presented awards to the family members of the martyrs of the July Uprising. In addition, four gazetted students injured in the July-August movement of the university – Md. Forkan Hossain, Imran Hossain Nadvi, Ashraful Alam Hridoy and Mehedi Hasan Rakib, and senior drivers Aynal Hossain and Md. Zahidul Islam were presented with awards for their contributions to the movement.
The mother of martyr Ahnaf Abir Ashrafullah, his family members, teachers, students, officials, employees and representatives of various departments of the university were present at the discussion.
