Bangladesh’s pharmaceutical sector is gradually gaining a strong position in the global market, said Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain.

He said, currently our medicines are being exported to more than 140 countries, which is an important advancement in the capacity of the country’s health sector.

He gave this information while talking to reporters at the conference room of the ministry at the Secretariat today (Monday).

The minister also said that the scope of Bangladesh’s medicine exports will further increase if the capacity to produce vaccines locally can be achieved.

He said that during the previous government, there was not enough progress in the production and supply of health equipment and vaccines. Even there was a shortage of emergency medical equipment like ventilators and syringes. However, later it was possible to deal with the health crisis with the cooperation of the private sector.

Regarding the dengue situation, Sakhawat Hossain said that the Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries (BAPI) has donated one lakh units of IV saline to support the treatment system of the patient. Currently, one lakh saline is stored in the central store. In addition, 20 to 25 thousand units of saline are in stock at the upazila level. However, preparations have been made to ensure additional supply if the need increases.

Regarding the incident of child death at Ad-Din Hospital, the minister said that the hospital authorities have been given two more days to respond to the show cause notice. If they do not respond within the stipulated time, further legal action will be taken.

At this time, State Minister for Health Dr. MA Muhith said that advance preparations have been made in view of the dengue season and various activities are being implemented to reduce the rate of infection.

Stating that the health sector is fully prepared to ensure prompt treatment of dengue patients, he said that all stakeholders concerned must work together to strengthen the public health system. The state minister also said that coordinated initiatives are being taken to develop the health sector, including dengue control.
