Asiatic Society Heritage Museum celebrates 7th anniversary and holds seminar

The 7th founding anniversary program and seminar of the Asiatic Society Heritage Museum located at the Bangladesh Asiatic Society was held at the society’s auditorium at 3:00 pm. Honorable Vice Chancellor of Central Women’s University, Professor Dr. Parveen Hasan, was present as the chief guest at the program. The program was moderated by the General Secretary of the Bangladesh Asiatic Society, Professor Dr. Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan, and chaired by the Vice President of the society, Professor Dr. Sajahan Mia.
At the beginning of the program, a minute of silence was observed in memory of eminent writer Syed Manjurul Islam, former president of Bangladesh Asiatic Society Professor Mahfuza Khanam and honorary director of the society’s art gallery Professor Hamiduzzaman. The speakers at the program respectfully paid tribute to Professor Mahfuza Khanam’s contribution to the people in establishing the Rathya Museum. Then General Secretary Professor Dr. Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan delivered the welcome speech. Later, the seminar titled “The Role of Barendra Bhoomi in Establishing Pala Rule in Bengal in the Analysis of Institutional Characteristics Data” was presented by Professor Dr. Md. Mozammel Haque, Professor of the Department of History and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of Jahasthirnagar University.
In the main article, he said that the layout of Barendra land has played an important role in the development of the socio-economic, political, religious and cultural environment of Bengal. The Brahmanical, Buddhist and Jain religious structures such as temples, monasteries and stupas spread across different parts of Barendra land bear witness to the activities of the ancient people of the Barendra area. He further mentioned that the agricultural economy of the Barendra region was strong since ancient times due to the flat land and alluvial plains of the Pleistocene era. In this region, which is free from river erosion and flooding, the foundations of permanent hut-built architecture can be seen since the early Middle Ages, which is known as the ‘Third Urbanization’ in Indian history.
After presenting the main paper, the chief guest Professor Dr. Parveen Hasan said in his speech that Bangladesh Asiatic Society is a leading research institute of the country and Asiatic Society Heritage Museum is our national treasure. For more than seven decades, the institution has been working continuously on the life, history, culture, heritage, science and philosophy of the people of Asia. He further said that this museum has been established by preserving the ‘Nimtali Deuri’, the entrance gate of Nimtali Palace, which is intertwined with the memories of the Naib-Nazims of Dhaka, and focusing on the historical artifacts of the 1700s to 1900s. The project was implemented under the supervision of Bangladesh Asiatic Society with the patronage and financial assistance of the Ministry of Culture. He praised the role of the society in the field of history, literature, science and art.
Finally, President Prof. Dr. Szahan Mia in his closing speech said that the path taken by the Pan, Bangladesh Asiatic Society to reach its current position is a result of the sacrifices and efforts of the scholars, researchers and members of the society. He expressed his gratitude to all concerned.
