The mysterious suicide of a college student in Shyamoli, the capital, has cast a shadow of grief. The family alleges that this tragic outcome was due to long-term blackmail and mental torture by a classmate.
It is learned that Risika (pseudonym), a resident of Shyamoli Road No. 2, committed suicide by hanging herself at her home. She was a student of Class XI of the Mohammadpur branch of Cambrian School and College. The incident took place on the 24th.
According to the family, her classmate Tahmid had been blackmailing her for a long time by threatening to release personal photos and videos. Since she withdrew from the relationship, the mental stress and harassment continued to increase, which ultimately forced her to take an extreme decision. Risika’s mother Shams Sultana Rumi said in a tearful voice,
“They have ended all my daughter’s dreams. I don’t want any compromise, I want justice. I am destitute after losing my only child.”
The father, who is living abroad, has also demanded exemplary justice in this incident.
According to local sources, Risika was very talented. After achieving GPA-5 in the 2025 SSC exam, she was admitted to Uttara Milestone College. Even her visa process to go to the United States was going on—everything stopped before she could move forward on the path of a new life.
According to the details of the incident, she spoke to her family the night before her suicide. The next afternoon, when she became suspicious, she was seen hanging from the fan through the window. When she was rushed to the hospital, the doctor declared her dead.
The family further alleged that the accused Tahmid was roaming around the house on the morning of the incident but did not inform any of the family. They claim that if she had been informed in time, the girl might have been saved.
A case of accidental death has been filed at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in this incident. The police said that an investigation is underway to find out the real cause of the incident and the mobile phone data has been sent for forensic analysis.
Social Reality and Concerns
Cyberbullying, blackmail, and digital harassment are increasing at an alarming rate in Bangladesh. Teenagers and students in particular are the biggest victims. Using personal information or relationships as a tool to create mental stress has now become a silent terror.
Various studies show that thousands of people in the country choose suicide every year, a large portion of which are young people. Cheating in love, online harassment, and blackmail are emerging as major reasons behind these incidents.
Final Words
Risika’s death is not just a personal loss for a family—it is a big warning for our society.
Digital security, family awareness, and emotional support—these three issues are the need of the hour.
How many more dreams will we have to lose before we become truly aware?
