Dinajpur is full of rice and litchi, the district of Mode. Keeping that in mind, the aesthetic litchi square has been built at the entrance of Dinajpur. This litchi square has been built to brand the traditional and delicious litchi, enhance the aesthetics of the city and create public awareness. This square is attracting visitors even at night. Some are taking selfies or pictures. Some are stopping their cars and taking a look. The litchi square was inaugurated after the completion of construction at the Dinajpur Government College intersection on January 3. It was inaugurated by the Divisional Commissioner of Rangpur Division, NDC, Md. Shahidul Islam. Md. was present. Riaz Uddin, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Dinajpur and Municipal Administrator of Dinajpur Municipality. It has become a reality through his planning and implementation. His role in urban development, beautification and people-friendly initiatives has been appreciated by the people of Dinajpur. The concerned people expressed their hope that this litchi square will become an important symbol of tourism, culture and city identity in the future. It is known that litchi cultivation was first started in Dinajpur in the country. However, no specific date or year is known. Legend has it that sometime during the British period, Abdul Haque of Mashimpur village of Auliapur union of Sadar upazila brought and planted litchi seedlings from Bombay, India. Since then, litchi cultivation started in Dinajpur. Later, cultivation of various varieties of litchi including Bombay, Madraji, Haria Bedana, Jackfruit, China-three, Pink was started here. Although the litchi of Dinajpur has gained popularity in the country and abroad, there has been no research or work on litchi. However, litchi cultivation in this district has a 150-year history. The value of litchi in Dinajpur is different. Locals also call the litchi of Dinajpur as natural rasgolla. Visitors including Abdul Rakib, Sabur Chowdhury, Faruk Hossain said that the best and tastiest litchi of the country is produced in Dinajpur. This litchi is not only going abroad but also to Dinajpur. It is going to different districts of the country by meeting the current demand. This aesthetic litchi square is presenting Dinajpur to the world. The aesthetics of the city have increased. The auto-rickshaw driver said that this place is known as Dinajpur Government College Mor. But after the construction of the litchi square, the area has now become known as litchi square. Associate Professor Md., Head of the Department of Botany of Dinajpur Government College and General Secretary of the Teachers’ Association. Delwar Hossain said, “Dinajpur’s litchi has already been recognized as a GI product. This litchi square will play an important role in branding traditional and delicious litchi, enhancing the aesthetics of the city, and creating public awareness.”
