Mohammad Masud Majumdar: On Saturday, July 25, at the Chhotulagaon Women’s College Auditorium in Barura Upazila of Comilla, an Inter-School English Debate Competition was held with the participation of students of class 9 and 10 at the initiative of Chhotulagaon High School.
The topic of this debate was “The Government Alone Cannot Solve Social Problems.” Students of class 9 and 10 participated in a lively and informative debate in English by presenting arguments for and against the topic. The students’ fluent presentation, analytical speeches and confident arguments impressed the guests, teachers and spectators present.
The Proposition Team won the competition.
School teachers Shamima Akhtar, Masud Alam and Mamunur Rashid served as judges in the debate competition. The program was coordinated by the school’s English teacher Ziaul Haque and the school’s assistant principal Abul Kalam Azad acted as the moderator.
Engineer Atiqur Rahman, Chairman, Standard Group, was present as the chief guest.
Mahmuda Rahman, Faria Rahman, Sabiha Sultana, Acting Principal, Chhotatulagaon Women’s College, Selman Yalcin (Turkish citizen and US expatriate), Nilesh Jain (Indian, Hong Kong expatriate, Chartered Accountant and Businessman) and Paritosh Kumar, Head of Accounts, Standard Group were present as special guests.
Golam Mustafa, Headmaster, Chhotatulagaon High School, presided over the program.
At the end of the competition, both the teams were honored and motivated by giving books. In their speeches, the guests said that debate plays an important role in developing students’ English language skills as well as developing logical thinking, leadership qualities, self-confidence and social awareness. They called for the continuation of such educational and creative events in the future.
The event was attended by teachers, students, parents, invited guests and local dignitaries. The lively event created new interest and enthusiasm among the students towards English language practice, logical thinking and debate culture.
