Tawhid Hossain Sarkar:
Advocate Atiqur Rahman, central president of the Bangladesh Workers Welfare Federation, said that discrimination is a long-standing problem in Bangladesh. Even after 54 years of independence, the country is carrying the burden of discrimination. This situation cannot be changed overnight. However, the true evaluation of the sacrifices of all martyrs, including martyr Abu Sayed of the July Movement, is possible only by building a discrimination-free Bangladesh.
He said these things in response to questions from journalists after visiting the grave of Abu Sayeed, one of the martyrs of the anti-fascist movement, and meeting his family members on the occasion of July Martyrs’ Day on Thursday (July 16).
Advocate Atiqur Rahman said, “We have to move forward towards implementing the goal for which Abu Sayeed gave his life. There has not been much significant progress in the last one and a half years. The elected government took office only four months ago. We hope that the political leadership will work sincerely to build the Bangladesh of the dreams of those who sacrificed their lives in the mass movement in July 2024 and that no one will deviate from the path of reform.”
He said, “Currently, there is some disappointment among the people due to various reasons. We have not yet fully reached the place of expectation that Abu Sayeed dreamed of for reform and that millions of students, youth, youth and workers participated in that movement. However, we believe that the blood of the martyrs will never go in vain. Their sacrifice will take Bangladesh forward on the path of development and building a just state.”
He further said, “We believe that the reform process will not be blocked by any political party or force in Bangladesh. Whether today or tomorrow, the aspirations of the martyrs will be realized through the necessary reforms, InshaAllah. Everyone has to fulfill their responsibilities from their respective positions in building the country. The country’s youth, youth and labor community are aware and they are moving towards the desired Bangladesh.”
Regarding the visit to Abu Sayeed’s grave, the central president said, “The visit to Abu Sayeed’s grave gives us new enthusiasm and inspiration. The memories of July come to mind again. His sacrifice has moved not only Bangladesh but also people all over the world. He sacrificed his life with a smile in front of the tyrannical Sheikh Hasina’s thugs. It would have been unimaginable without seeing Abu Sayeed that a young man can give his life like this for the sake of the nation. We hope that brave young men like Abu Sayeed will stand up against injustice and oppression in the future for the welfare of the country and Bangladesh will reach its desired goal.”
Present at the event were Bangladesh Workers’ Welfare Federation Central Vice President Golam Rabbani, Deputy General Secretary Advocate Alamgir Hossain, Organizing Secretary Dr. Ziaul Haque, Rangpur Regional Assistant Director Professor Abul Hashem Badal, Rangpur Metropolitan President Advocate Kausar Ali, Rangpur District President Belal Abedin and leaders at various levels of the federation.
