The Forest Department has uprooted an illegal betel garden of about 3.29 hectares in the reserved forest land in the Chhota Pikol area adjacent to Kurma Khasia Punji in Kurma Forest Bit under Rajkandi Range of Kamalganj Upazila of Moulvibazar. Approximately 1,000 betel saplings were uprooted in the operation that started on July 7 (Tuesday) morning and lasted till 8 pm. Rajkandi Range Officer and Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) Pritam Barua said that the uprooting operation was carried out as part of the ongoing operation against encroachment of reserved forest land and illegal betel cultivation. A POR forest case is under process under the Forest Act in this incident. Legal action will be taken against those involved after the investigation. Kurma Bit Officer Md. Jewel Rana, along with the Sangyi Force, participated along with officials and employees of the Forest Department. The Forest Department said that such operations will continue in the future to protect reserved forest lands, conserve biodiversity, and prevent forest land encroachment and illegal cultivation.
