The funeral of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was held in the capital of Iran, Tehran. This Sunday morning (8 am local time and 10:30 am Bangladesh time), millions of people attended the funeral. The Iranian president, speaker and top government officials were present.

According to the Iranian news agency IRNA, one of the country’s most senior religious figures, Ayatollah Zafar Sobhani, led the funeral of the late Supreme Leader and four members of his family.

The funeral was attended by Iranian President Masoud Pajeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ezei. Khamenei’s three sons—Masoud, Maisam and Mostafa—were also present. However, due to illness and security reasons, the current Supreme Leader Mojtaba Ali Khamenei could not attend his father’s funeral.

In addition, the commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Esmail Qani, also attended the funeral.

Today is the second day of the seven-day official mourning and burial process for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. People flocked to Tehran today to pay their last respects to the leader. They attended the leader’s funeral with tearful eyes.

A public holiday has been declared across Iran today to mark the funeral. The body of the late leader will be transferred from Tehran’s Grand Mosalla in the evening. A mourning procession will be held across the capital tomorrow, Monday.

After the funeral procession, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s coffin will be taken to the city of Qom next Tuesday. Then on Wednesday, the coffin will be taken to Najaf International Airport in neighboring Iraq. From there, the funeral procession will go to the cities of Najaf and Karbala. Mourners will also pay their last respects to him there. A funeral will be held.

Then, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s body will be returned to his birthplace, the northeastern city of Mashhad, Iran. He is scheduled to be buried there.

On February 28, on the first day of the Iran-Iraq war, 86-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed along with several members of his family in a US-Israeli attack. Mojtaba Khamenei was seriously injured. Ayatollah Khamenei had been ruling Iran since 1989.

After Khamenei’s death, his son Mojtaba was declared the new Supreme Leader of Iran. He has not been seen in public since taking office.
