A young man has been sentenced to three months’ imprisonment by a mobile court in Trishal Upazila of Mymensingh for allegedly physically and mentally torturing his elderly parents for a long time while using drugs.
Trishal Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Md. Mahbubur Rahman handed down the sentence on Saturday (July 4). The convict, Akramul Islam (34), is the son of Md. Sirajul Islam, a resident of Naopara village in Shakhua Union of the upazila.
According to court records, Akramul Islam was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment under the relevant section of the Narcotics Control Act after being found guilty of assault while consuming drugs in case No. 51/26 of 2026. He has been sent to Mymensingh Central Jail as per the court’s warrant.
Earlier, Akramul Islam’s 80-year-old mother, Lutpunnahar, filed a written complaint with Trishal Police Station. In the complaint, she mentioned that her son had been addicted to drugs for a long time and used to come home and beat her and her husband, Sirajul Islam. He had also been vandalizing houses, abusing them and mentally torturing them in various ways.
Later, the victim, Lutpunnahar, informed the matter to Mymensingh Superintendent of Police Mohammad Kamrul Hasan over the mobile phone. After receiving the complaint, the Superintendent of Police immediately ordered Trishal Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mansur Ahmed to take necessary legal action.
On the instructions of the Superintendent of Police, a team of Trishal Police Station led by OC Mansur Ahmed conducted a raid and arrested the accused Akramul Islam. Later, when he was produced before a mobile court, the court found the charges true and sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment.
In this regard, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Kamrul Hasan said, “Those who torture their parents belong in prison. A healthy person can never torture their parents. Mymensingh District Police has always taken a strict stand against such crimes and is working to bring the criminals under the law and ensure punishment.”
