NDUB hosts 1st ever university level palliative care training in Bangladesh

Aiming to establish a student network for community-based palliative care and enhancing awareness and practical skills in this field, Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB) hosted the first ever university level training in Bangladesh.

The four-day program, titled “20-Hour Training for Career” was held on June 21, 22, 24, and 28. on the university campus. The training was jointly organized by Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB), Institute of Palliative Care Society-Bangladesh (IPCS-B), Palliative Care Society of Bangladesh (PCSB), and Bangladesh Notre Dame Alumni of North America (BNDANA).

The program featured both theoretical and practical aspects of palliative care, including its fundamental concepts, effective communication skills, community engagement, local resource management, nursing care, spiritual issues, caregivers’ challenges, social, economic and emotional aspects, death and dying, grief, and bereavement support.

The sessions were conducted by Dr.NaimAhmed, Prof. Dr. Nezamuddiin Ahmed, Dr. Noorjahan Begum, Dr. Mahbuba Zafrin Ahmad, Dr. Nisha Mortuza, Lailatul Ferdous, Rahima Akter, Shahana Sharmin, Khalid Arafat, Dr. Tasnim Jerin, Dr. Wai Wai Mroy John, Dr. Md. Ashraf Uddin Ahmed, and Professor Dr. Sunjida Shahriah.

The program was attended by Prof. Dr. Fr. Patrick Daniel Gaffney, CSC, Vice Chancellor NDUB, Dr. Br. Subal Lawrence Rosario, CSC,Registrar, Prof. Dr. Md. Shahidul Kabir, Chairman of the Microbiology Department,along with faculty members and administrative staff of the university.

Palliative care is a comprehensive approach to care that seeks to improve the quality of life of patients, suffering from life-limiting illnesses, by alleviating physical pain, psychological distress, and other forms of suffering. It also ensures the necessary emotional, social, and spiritual support for both patients and their families.
