Ending the long wait, India has announced the relaunch of tourist visas for Bangladeshi citizens. Applications for tourist visas will start from June 28, 2026, and the visa issuance process will start from July 1, 2026.
Dinesh Trivedi, the new Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka, made this important announcement at a function organized at the Indian Visa Application Center (IVAC) located at Jamuna Future Park in Dhaka on Thursday. Earlier today, he presented his identity card to His Excellency President Mohammad Shahabuddin and made this positive announcement immediately after assuming office.
High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi said that along with tourist visas, medical visas for Bangladeshi citizens will also remain open as usual. Initially, the activities will be conducted through five main visa centers – Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna and Sylhet. He also mentioned that the number of visa centers will be further increased for the convenience of applicants in the future.
It is worth noting that due to the political and security situation that emerged in 2025, the Indian visa operations in Bangladesh were significantly limited. Experts see this decision to re-introduce tourist visas as a new chapter and a major step forward in the diplomatic and political relations between Dhaka and Delhi after a long period of stagnation and uncertainty.
According to diplomatic analysts, this announcement at the beginning of the new Indian High Commissioner assuming office is not just a visa-related administrative decision, but it also carries a positive political message to rebuild relations between the two countries. This decision has three main significances: It will pave the way for direct travel between the people of the two countries and restore long-standing family-cultural contacts.
It will serve as a milestone in increasing mutual trust and bilateral confidence between Bangladesh and India.
It will have a major positive impact on border trade, tourism industry and regional economy. New momentum will return to the aviation, land ports and tourism sectors.
As visa facilitation is the most visible diplomatic step to the general public, this decision is expected to serve as a symbol of improving relations between the two countries. The Indian High Commission has made necessary preparations to deal with the surge in applicants at visa centres when the application process begins in full swing from June 28.
