Pirojpur Correspondent: A Bailey bridge carrying a truck loaded with raw materials has collapsed and fallen into a canal at a place called Debipur on the Pirojpur-Mathbaria-Patharghata-Barguna road. As a result, road communication between Pirojpur, Mathbaria upazila and the neighboring district of Barguna has been completely cut off.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday (June 10). Hundreds of vehicles and thousands of passengers plying on this route have suffered greatly due to the road communication being cut off.
According to local and police sources, a potato-laden truck belonging to Zakir Hossain, a businessman from Tushkhali Mathbaria area, climbed onto the Bailey bridge in the Debipur area with excess goods in the early hours of the morning. Due to the excess weight, the bridge could not take the load and collapsed from the middle and fell into the canal along with the truck. Since the incident, all types of traffic in the area have been stopped and long traffic jams have been created on both sides of the bridge.
Since the bridge collapsed, hundreds of trucks carrying goods and other small and large vehicles, including long-distance buses traveling directly between Pirojpur, Mathbaria and Barguna, have been stuck on both sides of the road. Common people have been seen trying to cross on foot or in alternative risky ways.
In this regard, Pirojpur Roads and Highways (SOWZ) Executive Engineer Md. Russell said that they are starting the rescue process immediately after receiving the news of the collapse of the Bailey Bridge.
He said, “We have already informed our higher authorities about the matter. Efforts are being made to recover the truck that fell into the canal as soon as possible and repair the Bailey Bridge on an urgent basis to normalize traffic.” However, the official could not give a specific time when the communication system will be fully operational.
