Mirasrai Correspondent : In a series of sweeping drives, Zorarganj Police under Mirasrai Upazila arrested three drug traffickers with a consignment of Yaba tablets, alongside four other wanted fugitives, including a woman. A total of 3,312 pieces of Yaba were seized during the operations conducted at various locations across the upazila between Thursday and Friday (June 4 and 5).
According to police sources, the drug traffickers were caught red-handed while attempting to smuggle the contraband using highly deceptive methods, including hiding them inside areca nut (supari) stems and passenger luggage.
Yaba Hidden Inside Areca Nut Stems!
At around 3:45 AM on Friday (June 5), a police team led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Hannan Al Mamun conducted a raid in front of the North Sonapahar Traffic Box in Baraiyarhat Municipality. During the operation, the movement of a youth named Md. Ayas (24), hailing from Maulvipara in Teknaf Sadar Union, Cox’s Bazar, raised suspicion. Upon detaining and searching him, police discovered 1,312 pieces of Yaba tablets craftily concealed inside the stems of seven bunches of areca nuts, wrapped airtight with adhesive and polythene.
Couple Posing as Passengers Arrested with 2,000 Yaba
In a separate drive at around 8:45 AM, the same police officer set up a checkpoint in the Baraiyarhat area and intercepted a Dhaka-bound ‘Royal Coach Service’ passenger bus. A married couple traveling as regular passengers was arrested from the bus.
The arrestees have been identified as Md. Jafar Iqbal (29) and his wife Mosammat Juthi (21), residents of Sadhupara under Aminpur Police Station in Pabna. Upon searching their black luggage containing family clothing, police recovered 2,000 pieces of Yaba tablets wrapped in scotch tape and hidden inside two plastic packets tightly secured with screws.
Four Other Fugitives Apprehended
Apart from the drug traffickers, police arrested four other individuals in separate drives.
Warrant Execution: SI Mamun Hasan and ASI Abdul Wadud arrested Mosammat Shirina Begum and her husband Md. Yasin from their residence in the South Moragang area of Zorarganj. The couple was wanted under a CR case (Sections 323/506-1 of the Penal Code).
Theft Suspect: PSI Kamrul Hasan detained Md. Alauddin (40), a resident of Musapur in Sandwip, from the BSRM Gate area as a suspect in a Zorarganj Police Station theft case (Sections 457/380 of the Penal Code).
Preventive Detention: SI Md. Saddam Hossain detained another individual named Shaheduzzaman Shahed (40) from the Dhoom area under Section 151 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
Official Statement:
Mohammad Abdul Halim, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Zorarganj Police Station, stated, “Under the direct guidance of the Honorable Superintendent of Police of Chattogram District, we maintain a zero-tolerance policy against narcotics and continue our regular anti-crime drives. Appropriate legal actions have been taken against the arrested individuals, and they have been produced before the court. Our operations to curb crime will continue.
