Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has ordered the immediate opening of six unused children’s hospitals.
On April 12, a report titled ‘6 children’s hospital buildings are lying at a cost of Tk 320 crore’ was published in a newspaper. Later, the report came to the attention of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The report mentioned that although six modern hospital buildings were constructed in Rangpur, Khulna, Rajshahi, Barisal, Sylhet and Comilla, they have been lying unused for years.
After reading the news published in the newspaper, the Prime Minister held an emergency meeting with Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain, State Minister Dr. MA Muhith and Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Md. Kamruzzaman Chowdhury and other concerned parties.
The Prime Minister immediately instructed the concerned parties, including the Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, present in the meeting, to immediately inspect these six unused hospitals and make them operational.
At the same time, the Prime Minister instructed to submit an overall report on the implementation and progress of the directives by June 2, 2026.
The Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Zahidul Islam Rony gave this information.
The Deputy Press Secretary said that it was discussed in the meeting that the Kushtia Medical College Hospital is partially operational. In this regard, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has ordered to fully launch this 500-bed hospital.
In addition, the Prime Minister ordered to quickly launch the remaining hospitals, including the Super Specialized Hospital under the Bangladesh Medical University in Shahbagh, the capital Dhaka.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has ordered to quickly start work by involving the Chinese Embassy through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to quickly advance the work of the 1,000-bed Bangladesh-China Friendship Hospital in Nilphamari.
It is learned that the Bangladesh-China Friendship Hospital in Nilphamari will be built in Sadar Upazila. The project is consistent with the election manifesto of the current government (establishing modern ‘secondary healthcare units’ in each district).
Kamruzzaman Chowdhury, Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said, “In the northern part of Bangladesh, especially in Rangpur division, with a population of about 20 million, it has become difficult to ensure medical services for complex diseases due to high poverty rates, limited health infrastructure and lack of skilled human resources. In this situation, if the Bangladesh-China Friendship Hospital is built, the hospital will work as a regional referral center.”
In addition, the Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare also commented that expanding advanced medical services in the northern region is a timely and strategic step.
