Muhammad Atiqur Rahman, Gazipur District Correspondent: District Council Administrator Dr. Barrister Chowdhury Ishraq Ahmed Siddiqui held a press conference in the wake of news published in various media regarding the Gazipur District Council’s FDR of Tk 62 crore.
At a press conference organized at his office on Thursday (May 7) afternoon, he said that the Gazipur District Council will follow a ‘zero tolerance’ policy against any kind of irregularities, corruption or financial irregularities and all necessary measures will be taken to uncover the truth.
He said that after assuming office, several effective steps have been taken to bring about administrative discipline, financial transparency and development activities in the District Council. He claimed that the financial capacity of the District Council is currently in a stronger position than ever before. He said that where the amount of FDR was about Tk 55 crore earlier, it has now increased to Tk 115 crore through a systematic process.
The administrator made it clear, ‘No individual can redeem the FDR in the name of any organization alone. All activities have been conducted in accordance with all banking rules and regulations, administrative approvals and government rules.’
He also said that if there is any allegation of legal or administrative irregularities in this regard, it will be investigated impartially and if necessary, a full investigation will be conducted through a government audit.
At the press conference, he alleged that a vested interest group that has been formed in the district council for a long time is trying to tarnish the image of the organization by spreading misleading information due to administrative reforms and transfers. However, he said that development and service activities in the public interest will continue without being confused by these propaganda.
Meanwhile, there are discussions in various quarters that there have been visible changes in administrative activities in recent times under the leadership of the Chief Executive Officer of the district council, Md. Nazrul Islam. After assuming office, he has taken steps like issuing ID cards to officials and employees, restoring discipline in office management, adding new registers, taking initiatives to recover undeclared assets, increasing revenue collection, paying arrears and ensuring transparency in project management. He has also won praise from the locals for creatively reconstructing a dilapidated structure in the Zilla Parishad premises damaged in the July Movement and installing a map of Gazipur and Bangladesh there.
Administrator Dr. Barrister Ishraq Ahmed Siddiqui said, ‘We are working to transform Gazipur Zilla Parishad into a modern, people-friendly and accountable institution. No propaganda or conspiracy of evil circles will be able to stop this trend of development.’
