BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia finally gave up after fighting death for 37 days at Evercare Hospital. He died on Tuesday (December 30) morning. (Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raziun). The uncompromising leader said goodbye to the countrymen.

Begum Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare Hospital in the capital on November 23. Since then he was under treatment there.

Khaleda Zia returned home after the Armed Forces Day program on November 21. Then he fell ill and had severe shortness of breath. In this situation, on November 23, he was taken to Evercare Hospital in the capital and the doctors said that he was suffering from pneumonia. There are some other complications. He also had to undergo kidney dialysis.

Khaleda Zia was suffering from various serious diseases for several years. Going through the medical history, it is known that Khaleda Zia was suffering from various complications including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, kidney, lung and eye problems for many years. Khaleda Zia’s personal doctor and BNP Standing Committee member A ZM Zahid Hossain lastly said that she was being treated at the hospital in critical condition with serious lung and heart infection.

After being convicted in two cases from February 2018, he spent the next two years in solitary confinement in an abandoned prison in Old Dhaka. At that time, his relatives wanted to meet him in prison but it was not possible. After a long wait, the prison authorities said, “Khaleda Zia is ill.” Khaleda Zia was taken to Bangladesh Medical College Hospital several times for health check-ups while in prison. If in the country at that time his choice was United Hospital. Despite repeated requests, the Awami League government did not allow him to be sent abroad for treatment. The leaders and activists of his party also protested to take him abroad.

In May 2021, Khaleda Zia was also infected with Corona while confined in her house in Dhaka. He had to be treated in the Coronary Care Unit due to breathing problems. Even then he was suffering from various diseases including heart, kidney and liver, which complicated his physical condition.

In June 2024, a meeting of the medical board consisting of local and foreign doctors decided to install a pacemaker in his body. At that time, her personal doctor Zahid Hossain said, ‘Madame had heart problems before. There was a heart block. A ring was previously worn. After reviewing everything, a pacemaker was installed on the advice of the medical board.

After the political change in August 2024, Khaleda Zia was fully released from all penalties by the executive order of the President on August 6. He then went to London, UK for treatment. Later, her personal doctor A Z M Zahid told reporters, “Madam has various physical complications, which we have mentioned several times. After all, the complications of his liver, i.e. liver cirrhosis, after compensatory liver disease, great-to-set tips (special methods of medical science, TIPS-tips) have been done. There are some technical aspects of the tips, there are adjustments… You can see after stunting the heart and re-stunting for it or checking that the stunting is working well or not… these things we couldn’t do.”

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia returned home after nearly four months of treatment. Since then he was receiving treatment in the country.
