Md. Shahriar Ripon:- Chittagong: 13 September 2025 Commerce Advisor Sheikh Bashiruddin said, “Our country has a shortage of raw materials to manufacture products, but students can fill that shortage through knowledge acquisition. Allah has not given anyone a monopoly on knowledge acquisition. Whoever tries as hard as he can achieve as much. There is no syndication here.”
He said, “Economic development is possible by meeting the shortage of raw materials if labor productivity, utility proportion, logistic excellence, cost to finance, access to finance and access to market can be ensured.” He mentioned that it is possible to transform Bangladesh into a gold mine within five years by providing the right political leadership.
The advisor delivered the keynote address at the closing ceremony of a two-day international conference on “The Future of Business: Innovation, Technology and Sustainable Development” organized by the Business Research Bureau of Chittagong University at Hotel Radisson Blu in Chittagong yesterday (September 12) night. He then answered various questions from teachers and students.
The trade advisor said that uninterrupted supply of goods plays an important role in market management. During the past Ramadan, the prices of daily necessities were low due to the overall efforts of the government’s Finance Department, Central Bank and Commerce Ministry to keep the supply chain normal.
Stating that it was a challenge to steer the market in the right direction after August 5, the trade advisor said, “As you know, many members of the so-called syndicate fled the country at that time. Maintaining the supply side was very complicated at that time. With the overall efforts of the government, we were able to rise from that situation. This has been possible due to the establishment of democracy in business and the special grace of Allah Almighty.”
He also said, after the fall of Sheikh Hasina, our reserves were around 10 billion. We had liabilities of 6 billion to different countries and various institutions. Under the leadership of Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, we have paid all the liabilities. Currently, the country’s reserves are 30 billion dollars.
What are the expectations from the future political government? In response to a question, the advisor said, the fascist rulers of the past 16 years created cronies. The distribution of wealth was severely unbalanced. The cronies they created did not play a role in the country’s economy, but rather destabilized the market system.
If the future government manages the market in a democratic manner and carries out impartial reforms through coordinated initiatives, then the market system will be strengthened and a balanced distribution of wealth will be ensured.
The event was presided over by Chittagong University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yahya Akhtar. Other guests included Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Mohammad Shamim Uddin Khan, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin, Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration Professor Dr. Md. Tayyab Chowdhury, University Grants Commission Member Professor Mohammad Ayub Islam and Sonali Bank PLC Chairman Muslim Chowdhury.
Later, Commerce Advisor Sheikh Bashiruddin presented crests to representatives of individuals and organizations for their special contributions to trade and commerce.
