Two people have been sentenced to one year in prison by a mobile court for illegally extracting sand from the Meghna River in Ashuganj, Brahmanbaria. The sentenced individuals are Ahmed Ali, son of Abdur Rashid of Bhairab, Kishoreganj, and Amjad Hossain, son of Shahjahan Mia of Raipura Upazila, Narsingdi.
The operation was conducted in the Char Sonarampur area of ​​the Meghna River on Tuesday morning, September 2. Ashuganj Upazila Executive Officer and Executive Magistrate Rafe Mohammad Chara conducted the operation. At that time, 4 dredgers and 5 bulkheads used for sand extraction were seized. However, another dredger was forcibly snatched by the sand extractors from the administration. The seized dredgers are Mayer Doa Load Dredger-1, Mayer Doa Load Dredger-2, Mousumi Dredger, Sumon Enterprise Dredger and the bulkheads are Messrs. Fend Ship Navigation, Fazle Rabbi, Allah Bhorsa, Fi Amanillah Shipping, Mercus Dhali Enterprise.
Ashuganj Upazila Executive Officer and Executive Magistrate Rafe Mohammad Chara said that a group of people have been illegally extracting sand from the Char Sonarampur area of ​​Ashuganj since late at night after coming outside the designated boundaries of the lease on the Bhairab side of the Meghna River. Last Thursday, 5 dredgers were seized and they were prohibited from extracting sand. But again, the group ignored the administration’s prohibition and started extracting sand from late at night. Later, after receiving information, 5 dredgers and 5 bulkheads were seized in the morning and 2 people were arrested. While bringing the seized 5 dredgers and 5 bulkheads to the shore, the leaseholder who extracted sand from Bhairab, led by Tarek, the younger brother of Bhairab Upazila BNP President Rafiqul Islam, attacked us and forcibly snatched the dredger from us and tried to forcefully take us towards Bhairab. Later, we quickly left by speed boat. A regular case will be filed with Ashuganj Police Station on charges of obstructing government work in this incident. We will conduct regular operations. Brahmanbaria Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Didarul Alam said, people from Bhairab come and extract sand illegally. Instructions have been given in this regard to conduct operations to arrest those who extract sand illegally and seize sand extraction equipment.
