The tomb of a person known as Nurul Haque alias Nural Pagal has been built about 12 feet above the ground in Goalande, Rajbari. Locals allege that since this tomb is made in the model of the holy Kaaba Sharif, it hurts religious sentiments and is against Islamic Sharia.
On the afternoon of August 25, senior officials of the district and upazila administration, the district Imam Committee and leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami visited the tomb. As the situation became heated, a meeting was also held with the Towhidi people, Nural Pagal’s family and devotees. However, no final decision has been made about the tomb yet.
Nural Pagal came into the discussion in the late eighties by claiming himself to be Imam Mahdi and was forced to leave the area in 1993 by giving a pledge in the face of public anger. Later, he returned and started running the Darbar Sharif. He died of old age-related illness on August 23 and was buried in a specially made grave in the premises of Darbar Sharif at night.
On the incident, local Ulama-e-Keram and Towhidi Janata held a protest meeting on the morning of August 24 and decided to announce a big rally and protest program on August 26. However, they postponed the program at the request of the administration.
District Imam Committee President Md. Ilias Molla said that Nural Pagal’s demands while alive were destructive of faith. Now there is an attempt to make his grave in the image of Kaaba Sharif and make it a shrine, which will cause terrible confusion for Muslims. He demanded that the grave be taken down naturally and the image of Kaaba removed.
Goalanda Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Nahidur Rahman said that the administration has held a meeting with both sides and is trying to find a peaceful solution.
