Currently, passengers are traveling on this road in a colorful environment.
It was seen on the spot that the country’s busiest Dhaka-Chittagong highway is decorated with flowers of various colors. On both sides, there are now red, blue, yellow, purple and white flower fairs. There are rows of flower gardens on the divider of this four-lane highway. And in that garden, various flowers including Kanchan, Karbi, Gandharaj, Kurchi, Radhachura, Jarul are blooming. In the middle, there is a colorful flower garden with spring flowers and on both sides, there is a tarred road. This scene is now catching the eyes of passengers traveling between Dhaka and Chittagong. More flowers can be seen in the 105-kilometer Comilla section of the highway in the district’s Daudkandi, Chandina, Burichang, Sadar Dakshin and Chauddagram upazilas.
According to Comilla Roads and Highways (SOWJ), after the highway was converted to four lanes, various species of trees have been planted on the divider so that the headlights of vehicles in one lane do not fall on vehicles in the other lane. Flower trees have been planted in some places on the divider, while other trees have been arranged in other places. Various species of trees have been planted in the 143-kilometer area of the 192-kilometer highway from Daudkandi to Chittagong City Gate. These include Kanchan, Karbi, Gandharaj, Kurchi, Radhachura, Haimanti, Tagor, Sonalu, Krishnachura, Kadam, Bakul, Palash and other flowering trees. More than 50,000 such flowering trees have been planted. In addition, more than 40,000 trees of various species including olive, arjun, jackfruit, mahogany, shishu, akashmani, neem, acacia, and haritaki have been planted on the side of the road and at different places on the divider.
A. Rahim, a bus passenger from Chandina Upazila, said, “Flowers bring joy to people’s hearts. There is now a flower fair on the entire highway in our area. Passengers traveling on this route are captivated by the beauty of flowers. We also enjoy the beauty of these flowers. The importance of our area has increased a lot because of these flowers. The flowers also move our hearts. We enjoy the beauty of these flowers with our friends while traveling along the road. Many times we take pictures with flowers. Passengers enjoy the beauty of flowers by seeing them with their eyes while sitting in the car. And we enjoy the beauty by touching them. So our joy is a little greater.”
Mohammad Kausar, a resident of Gouripur area of Daudkandi in the district, said, “Our house is next to the highway. So for the past few years, we have been passing by this flower garden. Different types of flowers bloom at different times. We also like this scene very much.”
Pickup driver Sumon, microbus driver Mustafa and other vehicle drivers who regularly ply the highway said that these flowering trees and other trees not only provide entertainment to people, but also provide great benefits. Due to the presence of these trees on the divider, the headlights of cars in one lane do not fall on cars in the other lane at night. As a result, accidents have decreased a lot on this highway compared to the past. It can be said that passengers enjoy the beauty of the flowers during the day, and the trees benefit drivers at night.
The Executive Engineer of the Roads and Highways (RHD) Department, Comilla said, “We have various plans, including providing railings on both sides of the divider to maintain the trees and enhance the beauty of the highway. Basically, in line with the highways of developed countries, the trees have been planted to prevent accidents by controlling the headlights of oncoming vehicles in the dark of night and to enhance the beauty of the highway. This has increased the beauty of the highway. He also said that workers are working regularly to maintain the trees on the divider.”
