Kazi Mamun / Patuakhali::-
The official working day is 9 am, but the clock shows 11:11 am. The three rooms of the Mirzaganj Upazila Youth Development Officer’s office in Patuakhali are still locked. The national flag has not even been hoisted. People who come to seek services are returning disappointed because the office room is locked.
When the issue became a hot topic among the locals, on Sunday morning (January 18), when I went to the Mirzaganj Upazila Youth Development Office, I saw that all three rooms of the office were locked. Although the office was supposed to open at 9 am as per the government policy, no official activities had started even after 11 am. After a long wait, many service recipients were seen expressing anger and leaving. Lal Mia, who works at the food office coming from Jatibunia, said, “I don’t understand why no one is coming even though it is 10.50 am.” Md. Jamal, a service seeker coming from West Subidkhali, said, “I came at 10.15 am to inquire about admissions, but I haven’t seen any official yet. All the doors of the office are locked, so I am going home now.”
A local shopkeeper, who did not want to be named, said that this is not something new. When contacted on mobile phone, Upazila Youth Development Officer Syed Md. Faruk Hossain, he said, “I am performing additional duties and am currently in Dumki.” As the reason for not opening the office lock, he claimed that the peon’s house is in Bauphal, which is on that road, and he will be there in a while. And Assistant Officer Md. Nasir Hossain has gone to the district office for work. Locals and service seekers said that there is strong dissatisfaction among the locals over the absence of all the office personnel in an important government office and the office being locked during working days. The question of the common people is, is this an office or a ghost office. Drawing the attention of the higher authorities of the upazila administration, the service seekers say that the government’s service activities are being disrupted due to such negligence in performing duties. This mismanagement needs to be eliminated quickly. In an interview with the media, Mirzaganj Upazila Executive Officer Mosa: Moliha Khanam said, “I have come to know about the matter. I am warning them now and necessary further action will be taken in this regard.”
