Victim undergoing treatment in hospital, family terrified by threats of attack and loot

A daily wage worker’s wife has been brutally tortured over a land dispute in Chetna Para village of Bhendabari Union No. 2 of Pirganj Upazila of Rangpur. The victim, who was seriously injured in the incident, is currently undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

According to local sources, Ripul Islam (35), a resident of Chetna Para village, has been in a land dispute with his aunt Rasheda Begum’s family for a long time. It is alleged that the attack took place over this dispute.

Victim Khadija Begum (28) said that on January 21, at around 10 am, Riful Islam, along with his wife Nazma Begum and other relatives, led by him, organized an ambush attack due to a land dispute with her cousin Riful Islam.

She said that at that time, while her cousin Ashraful Islam was passing by on a motorcycle, the accused snatched the motorcycle keys and attacked him with a spade, a pickaxe and a mason’s tool. When she and her mother tried to stop them, they were pushed to the ground and beaten.

Khadija Begum further alleged that at one stage, Riful Islam and his wife Nazma Begum directly attacked her. During the attack, when they pulled her right earring, her ear was torn and she was seriously injured. Later, her husband came to the spot and rescued her and admitted her to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

The victim’s family alleged that although they are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital, the accused are threatening to loot cows and calves in their house, beat them up and attack them again. Due to this, the family members including women and children living at home are spending their days in extreme fear and insecurity.

Tension is prevailing in the area over the incident. The victim’s family has sought immediate intervention of the administration and demanded that strict legal action be taken against the culprits.
