Top terrorist shooter Mannan was shot dead by his opponent in Gazaria, Munshiganj, due to a dispute over various issues including illegal sand mining and extortion in the river. The relatives of the deceased claim that people from the Lalu-Jewel group killed him.
The incident took place on Monday (July 28) at around 9 am in the Meghna River adjacent to Boro Kalipura village of Imampur Union of Gazaria Upazila.
Mannan (45) is the son of Jaishtila Nur Mohammad of Imampur Union of Gazaria Upazila. The injured are – Hridoy Bagh (28), Atiqur (30), Hasib (34), Shyamal (30), Nayan (25), Hamim (32).
Eyewitnesses to the incident, Koyjan, said that around 9:30 am on Monday, they saw a speedboat in the Bora Kalipura area of the Meghna River. Seven armed youths were patrolling the river in the speedboat. Some time after this incident, when seven men, including Suter Mannan and Hridoy Bagh, went down to the river in an engine-powered trawler, 15/16 men in another engine-powered trawler chased them from behind. They all had weapons in their hands, helmets on their heads, and jackets on their bodies. Some time after this incident, they heard the sound of 20/25 rounds of gunfire. After a while, the body of the bullet-ridden Mannan was lying on the trawler. The injured jumped from the trawler and fell into the water. At this time, the attackers quickly left the scene with the trawler and speedboat and headed towards Chandpur.
Eyewitness Helal said, “I don’t know who is shooting at whom, but we heard the sound of many gunshots.” Later, I heard that one person was shot dead and his body was left on the trawler.
Sumi Begum, wife of the deceased Mannan, said, “A few days ago, Mannan told me that Lalu and Jewel of Hoglakandi village wanted to kill him. They hired professional gunmen to kill him. This morning, we got the news that Mannan was shot dead. I am sure Lalu, Jewel and they were killed by their hired killers.”
Jahangir Alam, SI of Gazaria Gazaria Naval Police Outpost, said, “There are two bullet marks on the chest of the deceased. Judging by the condition, it seems that he was shot with a Chinese rifle. We recovered a bullet shell from the scene. Our higher authorities have been informed and they are coming to the scene.”
Md. Anwar Alam Azad, Officer-in-Charge of Gazaria Police Station, said, “Mannan is a notorious terrorist of Gazaria Upazila. Due to his special skill in handling weapons, he is known as Shooter Mannan to the locals.” There are several cases against him in various police stations, including Gazaria Police Station.
