A court in Mymensingh has sentenced three to death and three to life imprisonment in the farmer Ashrab Ali murder case over a previous land dispute.
The death sentences were given to Nur Hossain, Shahidul and Ujjal Mia and those sentenced to life imprisonment were Sohrab Ali, Swarupa Khatun and Rehana Khatun.
Judge Farhana Ferdous of the Mymensingh Special Sessions Judge’s Court passed the order in the presence of the accused on Monday (April 27) afternoon.
According to the case details, the convicts killed farmer Ashrab Ali with a country-made weapon in a pre-planned manner on the morning of January 18, 2014, in a land dispute in Phulpur upazila of the district. The next day, Julhas, son of the deceased Ashrab Ali, filed a case with Phulpur police station naming six people as accused.
After investigation, taking testimony of 15 witnesses, and arguments of the interrogating lawyers, the court found the accused guilty and sentenced Nur Hossain, Shahidul and Ujjal Mia to death and a fine of thirty thousand taka each, as well as accused Sohrab Ali, Swarupa Khatun and Rehana Khatun to life imprisonment and a fine of fifty thousand taka each, and an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment in default.
Mohammad Akram Hossain and A.H.M. Khalequzzaman were the lawyers for the state and the accused in the case.
