Chapainawabganj Correspondent:
Abid Rayyan Sohag is the younger son of Monirul Islam and Nurjahan Begum of Gopinathpur village of Islampur union of Chapainawabganj. He is a first-year student of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship department of Daffodil International University (DIU). Education has been completely stopped due to the coronavirus disaster. Sohag started an online mango business based on his hobby, rather than sitting idly. He has opened a group and page called ‘Gramingro’ on Facebook. He has also been successful.
Abid Rayyan Sohag said, when all educational institutions were closed due to the coronavirus, I moved to my own area. The family’s condition was also not going well. I was unemployed. I thought I needed to do something. Suddenly one day the idea of a mango business came to my mind. Because my father has several mango orchards. Then I came to know that one of my uncles will sell his 4 mango orchards. I thought I would take a risk. That’s the idea. Even though it was difficult, I bought his mango orchard.
Online-based business Sohag’s business is completely online-based. Customers order online. In this case, Sohag runs the campaign on Facebook. He said, we have our own page and group on Facebook. The main place of my business is Sylhet, Chittagong, Comilla and Dhaka. I have also supplied mangoes to about 35 districts across the country. However, the maximum mangoes went to Dhaka. Sohag supplies customers with completely safe and fresh, carbide-free mangoes. He said, there are more than 15 types of mangoes in my project. Lakshmanbhog, Gopalbhog, Amrapali, Himsagar, Langra. Currently, there are Ashwina, Bari-4, Katimon, Gourmati, Fazli mangoes. The mangoes in my project are completely carbide-free. They are collected from the orchard and packed by weight. There are different types of packets. 10, 12, 20, 24, kg packets.
Mango orchards require a lot of care. I have done all this myself. I have to monitor the mangoes twice a day. I used to take care of the mangoes that burst, get stained, and get shriveled.
In the beginning, I delivered 300-400 kg per shipment and this year, Alhamdulillah, I have delivered 1-2 tons of mangoes. The mangoes are now at the end. It can be said that they are almost finished. Now, I only have Bari-4, Amrapali, Gaurmati, Fazli, and Ashwina mangoes. These are also running out quickly. I do not have any warehouse. I have brought them all home from the garden and sent them in packages, and sometimes I have sent them in packages from the garden.
Support from family and friends – Sohag has received encouragement from his family and classmates in getting into the mango business. Talking about the support from his family and friends, Sohag said, the support of my family cannot be explained in words. Especially the contribution of my sister-in-law. My sister-in-law has always supported me. The contribution of my friends in getting into the online mango business is limitless. My friends have helped me in campaigning. Even after coming to the university, my department’s teachers, friends, older brothers and sisters, as well as juniors, have helped me a lot. I am grateful to them.
Many people have looked down on Sohag’s initiative as a mango trader, along with his studies. Or have made fun of him. Sohag has also been the victim of many trolls. However, Sohag also sees trolls in a positive light.
He said that many people have trolled me as a ‘mango trader’ because I suddenly started a business while studying. I see criticism positively. I want at least one person to be self-sufficient, if not 10, after following me.
Sohag dreams of becoming a big entrepreneur. Sohag has gradually added litchi, sugarcane and date molasses, pumpkin pills, honey, ghee, dry food, etc. to his business. Addressing young entrepreneurs, Sohag said, the only key to success in business is honesty. No matter what sector you are an entrepreneur in, you have to be honest, humble and hardworking. Then you will achieve success. If you want to be an entrepreneur, you also have to have the courage to take risks.
