International Desk: A protest against a possible peace deal was held outside a Foreign Ministry office in the northeastern city of Mashhad on Saturday.
Protesters chanted slogans against Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi after he gave a televised interview about a possible peace deal with the United States.
AFP reports.
A video published by the Fars News Agency shows women wearing black veils waving red and black flags in front of the building. They chanted slogans such as “Death to the foreign minister, he is an intruder.”
The protest comes at a time when US President Donald Trump and mediating country Pakistan are talking about a peace deal to end the war. However, some hard-line groups inside Iran oppose the deal.
They claim that the deal will not protect Iran’s interests and will reduce their strategic influence in the Strait of Hormuz. Taddet also alleges that Iranian negotiators made excessive concessions in reaching the deal.
Earlier, in an interview on state television on Friday, Araqchi said that according to the agreement on the negotiating table, the United States would lift the naval blockade imposed on Iranian ports. The blockade was imposed by the United States in response to Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
He added that “the administrative management of the Strait of Hormuz will not be the same as before.” He referred to the waterway as one of Iran’s most important tools of resistance.
In some videos circulating on social media (which AFP could not independently verify), people were seen chanting “Araqchi, resign” and “Ghalibaf, resign” in front of the Foreign Ministry in Tehran. Bagher Ghalibaf is known as the speaker of Iran’s parliament and chief negotiator.
US President Donald Trump and mediator Pakistan said on Saturday that a proposed deal to end the war could be signed as soon as Sunday. However, Tehran has been relatively cautious about the timetable and has not announced a firm date.
